Tok Pisin Language & Culture
Since its origins under colonial rule, Tok Pisin (also known as New Guinea Pidgin English) has become the most widely spoken of Papua New Guinea’s national languages. Closely related varieties are spoken in the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and the Torres Strait. Anyone going to Papua New Guinea for research, business, or employment will find that knowledge of Tok Pisin is necessary for effective participation in everyday life, especially in rural areas.
Our practical language courses assume no prior knowledge of the language and are immersive, with Tok Pisin used as the language of communication as much as possible. Important aspects of Melanesian culture will be presented in Tok Pisin.
Your instructor will be Professor Craig Alan Volker, who has taught Tok Pisin as a foreign language at universities in Papua New Guinea and Germany. He is able to teach at your institution overseas or to organise a completely immersive course in a Papua New Guinean village.
