using Bilingual readers
Bilingual readers are a good tool to help language learners read and think in the target language instead of just translating. Follow these steps:
- The student reads through the foreign language text. The student will not understand the material, but should be told not to worry about not understanding. The aim in this stage is just to guess what the main ideas are by using the foreign language text and pictures.
- Now the student reads the version of the book in his/her own language. The aim here is to get a good understanding of the details in the text. If any content is not clear, the student should ask about it. For example, even if the student understands the words in her/his own language, s/he may have questions about the cultural background or technical information.
- The next stage is to go through the foreign language text carefully and be sure to be able to understand all the words and sentences. Of course, the version in the student’s own language will help with this. The student should not translate everything, but should be able to answer questions in his/her own language about the foreign language text.
- The last stage is to try to translate the foreign language text into the student’s own language and to compare this translation with the version in the bilingual text. Of course, there are many ways to translate any sentence, so the student should know that if s/he has a different version from the version in the book, this is not necessarily wrong. This can be the basis for a question-and-answer session with a teacher.

When a young boy doesn't like miso soup because he thinks it moves and there is a ghost in the bowl, his grandmother takes him to the Hatchō Miso factory in Okazaki, Japan to learn how it is made.
He learns that his “ghost" is the kōji used to ferment the soybeans that become miso. He also learns how nutritious miso is and how the protein in it is “meat from vegetables”. The English text is explained in Japanese at the bottom of the page, making this an ideal aid for second language learning. For learners of Japanese or visitors to Japan, this is a good introduction to the most traditionally prepared kind of miso that is a basic ingredient in traditional, healthy Japanese cuisine. This picture book is suitable for curious children of all ages and is an ideal souvenir from central Japan. |

Let's go to the park! こうえんへいこう
